Hello Anonymous, You Certainly Are Anonymous!

Someone asked via the Ask the Darcy link “How do I know if this is really anonymous?”.

I have a variety of sneaky ways to see who is on my website, but really, all I can see is locations and what that person from that location is looking at.  And here’s the thing about that.  AJ lives in a particular city, we’ll just refer to it as Gotham because he doesn’t like me to say where he lives.  So AJ lives in Gotham and let’s assume Gotham is about 20 miles away from Chagrin Falls.  When AJ is on my website, it says someone from Chagrin Falls is on my site.  So I text him and say “Are you on my site?” and he says “Yes” and I say “Why does it say you are in Chagrin Falls?” and then he says “It’s not entirely accurate”.  Then the next time it says someone from Chagrin Falls is on my site, I text AJ and say “Are you on my site?” and he says “Yes”, and then I say “Why does it say you are in Chagrin Falls?” and he says “It’s not entirely accurate”.

So all that is to say, you are absolutely anonymous when you submit an Ask the Darcy statement/question/color/song lyric because it doesn’t even say where it was submitted from.  If it did say where it was submitted from, it would probably be inaccurate anyway.  I don’t know what an IP address is, and I don’t think it provides me with one anyway.  And it actually doesn’t even tell me when it was submitted.

I will say, though, I can tell every time my friend Karyn is on my site, but she’s pretty much the only one.

If I had any idea how computers or the internet worked, MAYBE I could figure out who you are when you post a thought/poem/word of advice/favorite fruit to the Ask the Darcy thing, but I can barely figure out how to post a picture.  And even AJ, who generally tells me “Duh, this is how you do it” can’t tell.

So from the furiously typing fingers of a person who is incapable of lying unless it involves an animal’s safety, you have my word that I am too stupid to ever figure out where you are from, who you are, or what your shoe size is based on a submission to Ask the Darcy.
